Creating a global, gender-focused campaign for school feeding

WFP

What we did

We developed a print and ad campaign focused on gender and food security for the World Food Programme to raise awareness about its impact in Canada.

The project

The World Food Programme’s “Bringing Girls to the Table” campaign is an impactful initiative designed to address gender disparities in education and nutrition through targeted school feeding programs. This campaign aligns with Canada’s feminist international assistance policy, emphasizing the role of nutrition in empowering girls and young women globally.

To highlight the critical link between nutrition and education, we helped WFP concept and launch this campaign, which sought to ensure that girls in developing regions have the necessary support to attend and excel in school. The link between school feeding, specifically when girls attend school, not only helps individual children but allows entire communities to prosper as a result.

Leveraging nutrition to support feminist policies

The campaign strategy leverages the benefits of combining educational support with nutritional programs. By aligning with Canada’s feminist international assistance policy, WFP highlighted and addressed the unique challenges faced by girls in accessing education. The initiative focused on dismantling barriers to education by providing school meals, which helps to increase school enrollment rates among girls and promotes gender equality in education.

Local impact and global reach

The execution of the campaign involved strategic partnerships and media engagements to raise awareness; notably, the campaign featured advertisements in the Globe and Mail, effectively reaching a wide Canadian audience and garnering support for WFP’s mission. The success of the campaign in Canada led to its extension globally, where it continues to raise awareness and generate support for school feeding programs.

Driving change through school meals

The “Bringing Girls to the Table” campaign has had a significant impact on improving girls’ access to education through the provision of school meals. Since the campaign, funding for school feeding programs has increased, and attention to the impact of feeding girls at school can have on communities has only deepend. The campaign has also played a crucial role in establishing WFP’s presence in Canada and aligning its efforts with Canadian international policy objectives, specifically around gender.
