What we did
The project
The World Resources Institute’s (WRI) Data Lab and Resource Watch platform is a pivotal advancement in how environmental data is utilized across a global network. The project aimed to refine and centralize WRI’s geospatial data services to provide more efficient and impactful environmental actions.
WRI recognized the challenges of fragmented data processes across its various programs and international offices. We helped them streamline these processes by assessing the common needs for geospatial data services and creating a centralized approach that would serve multiple programs efficiently.
Centralizing data to amplify impact
We identified and consolidated the overlapping data needs across WRI’s diverse programs. Our hypothesis was that by establishing a centralized data system, WRI would be able to enhance access, reduce redundancy, and foster a more collaborative environment. This approach was expected to not only streamline operations but also increase the agility and effectiveness of WRI’s environmental initiatives.
Comprehensive user needs assessment
Our team conducted an extensive user needs assessment through interviews and workshops with over 50 WRI staff from various offices worldwide. This assessment helped identify key areas for improvement in data management and utilization, which included enhancing data storage capabilities, simplifying data access, and fostering a more integrated data culture within WRI.
Implementing advanced data strategies and technologies
We presented our findings at a workshop held in Washington DC to help the team determine the best path forward. By centralizing data operations, WRI programs are now better equipped with the necessary tools and systems to use data more effectively. This has resulted in more coordinated efforts across programs, reducing inefficiencies and enhancing the impact of WRI’s global environmental actions.
Moving forward, WRI plans to implement the recommendations from the assessment, including the development of an enhanced technical infrastructure to support data needs and strategies. These enhancements will focus on further improving data accessibility and utility, ensuring that WRI continues to lead in leveraging data for environmental research and policy advocacy.
